In the 19th century, Down syndrome was known as "Mongolism, Kalmuk, Furfuraceous" types of "cretinism" distinct from instances of "cretins" due to maternal iodine induced goiters in Alpine and other mountainous regions. Mongolism was also known as "Acrodypslasia", a less offensive appelation that underscores the smallness of "distal" struacatures (nose, ears, limbs and digits).
