In 1889, following an international Socialist meeting in Paris, Floralia was adopted as the "day of the worker". This ancient Roman festivity, dedicated to Flora was celebrated at the end of spring. Soon, florid Floralia became "workers day", a world wide symbol of the labor moment, celebrated on May 1st. At the time, the US was in the grip of "robber barons" who were facing a growing labor movement largely introduced by migrant or rather immigrant workers. In 1894, the United States Congress decreed that instead of "workers day" on May 1st., the nation would celebrate "Labor Day" on the first Monday of September.

The link of labor to Floralia gains perspective by the realization that this deity is like Persephone and her Mother Ceres or Demeter, to whom some early Christian theologians compared Saint Mary or Theotokos (who brought forth God). "Bring to light", or in Spanish "dar a luz" or "bearing" or "birth", point to expansive vistas of "fruits of labor" which, along with parenthood, underscore that every sort of labor deserves deep respect.This brings us to having "labor free children", a "new biology" and advances marketed as ART (assisted reproductive technologies.) ART which offer access to planned eggs, embryos, gestations and deliveries. This industry is increasingly seen as a provider of "designer babies" for high fees . Concurrently, in the developing world, a new industry and labor are arising to satisfy demands from the rich, for eggs, sperm, embryos and wombs for rent.
